Summary

The best way to learn programming is through making! We will be using the Scratch environment to help us make engaging and interactive games or experiences. Students will draw from their creativity and imagination to create concrete and captivating games, and have fun doing it! We’ll explore the different skills needed to develop your own interactive games or experiences, including basic programming concepts. art and animation, and story design and development.

Enrollment Information

No more than 25 students are allowed to enroll, so please come to the first day of class in order to secure your enrollment. We also recommend additional support/participation from older siblings or parents/guardians for students under 8 years old, or for students unable to perform basic reading and math skills, to ensure your student has a high quality learning experience. Students are not expected to have any previous experience with block-based coding; however, 8-12 year olds with some previous block-based coding experience would still be a good fit.

Kidtrepreneurs is designed for kids aged 8-13. This class promotes creativity, resilience, and resourcefulness! Kidtrepreneurs is aimed at empowering kids to turn their ideas into fully-fledged startups. In this class, we’ll cover the ideation and product development stages as well as initial exposure to marketing, sales, KPI measurement, and the economics behind investment.

Engineering Design is intended for newer students hoping to gain experience in hands-on making and design. Engineering Design provides students with tools for designing, prototyping, and ideating in a makerspace environment. Students will learn about the engineering design process while developing a mindset of resilience, engagement, and action.

Summary

Students in this class will learn and apply the basics of robotics through educational block-based code simulations and a theoretical understanding of components functioning behind each robot. At the beginning of the course, students will set self-determined goals in these areas and work their way through the course to meet them. Through block-based code, students will creatively implement solutions to make their robot paths a reality. Equipped with the fundamentals, they will interact with the basics of real-world Python code for a 3D simulation. Students will also get the opportunity to take a look at the various types of sensors and wheels that build up the robot.

Summary

Game Design I is for 8 to 12 years old students who are passionate about video games. Using Roblox Studio to create their own Roblox games, students will learn what it takes to make a video game. Along the way, they will learn the different elements that make up a game, and learn how to talk about their favorite games through the critical lens of a game designer.

No more than 20 students are allowed to enroll, so please come to the first day of class in order to secure your enrollment. Students should be at least 8 years old, and have familiarity with using a computer (knowing how to open and close applications, knowing to click and drag, knowing to use the trackpad, etc.)

Summary

Students will use Roblox Studio to create their own adventure game. Along the way, they will learn about the different types of fun that games can have that appeal to different people, how their favorite games design for each type, and how to design for them in their own games. Students will learn how to create their own game world, bring their game to life with scripting, and even to monetize their game to make money! Our goal is for students to walk away from the class with an increased understanding of video games, how they are made, a game of their own, and an increased passion for game design and design in general.

Enrollment Information No more than 20 students are allowed to enroll, so please come to the first day of class in order to secure your enrollment. A computer with Roblox Studio installed is required for this class - a PC with Windows 7 or later or a Mac computer with macOS 10.10 or later. (Roblox Studio cannot run on Chromebooks or mobile devices such as tablets or smartphones.) This class is for students who are familiar with Roblox Studio, e.g. from taking Game Design I or from learning the basics from a getting started tutorial like this one.

Then this Youtube Storytelling class is perfect for you! Come learn how to tell stories through video, how to use your video camera-equipped device, and how to edit a video into a mini movie that you can share with your family, friends, and the rest of the world!

Digital Art is an introductory design class for students looking to learn more about the world of art and technology. This is an interdisciplinary class where students will be introduced to graphic design concepts and accessible trackpad platforms. In Digital Art students explore the many ways technology intersects with art, the benefits of using technology to create art, and the introductory design concepts (like color, typography, the creative process, etc.). Students in this class will walk with a deeper understanding of how technology breaks and bends the original boundaries of canvas art.

Summary

Come learn how to build a website around your interests or for your own business. In this class, students first learn how to plan and design their website and build it on WordPress, a template-based platform that requires no coding experience. Students will also learn how to market their website and optimize it for search engines like Google, Bing, or Yahoo and social media. By the course's end, students will have a functional website they can show off to the world and can use as a basis to build other websites in the future.

Summary

Students in App Design will learn how to design apps and think about the user experience. The class will push students to develop storytelling, researching, and prototyping skills in regards to app design. In App Design students do not learn how to code, but instead, learn the app design process for various mediums: computer apps, mobile apps, and apps for consoles - like Instagram and Spotify. Students will conduct research, build personal portfolios, and present their apps to the community for Demo Day! This class is great for students who already have their own app ideas or are looking for inspiration and guidance on how having an app will amplify their business.

Intro to Code is an introduction to how programming works. The concrete skills students learn in this class relate to how to design and implement a computer program. Many of the platforms and technologies students use to write and develop code will expose them to a wide range of softwares regularly used by engineers. Students will learn to interact and work with other students to solve computer science problems together. These first-time coders will learn Python!

So, you have learned the CS fundamentals in previous Streetcode classes. Do you find yourself asking what this knowledge is for? If so, just know that’s the fun part. The choice for its application is entirely up to you! All around us are problems waiting to be solved--everyday puzzles! Solutions can be developed through creativity and critical thinking. What do you want to improve, create, or solve? In this class, students will be able to explore projects that showcase the possibilities of code. Students will create their own programs to solve everyday dilemmas and apply their own creativity to develop customizable projects of their own, swag.

Intro to Hustle is an introductory-level class where students learn the basics of starting a business and enhancing entrepreneurial skills. This class encourages students to think on a large scale: go BIG or go home. Students in this class develop and create their business ideas, make a pitch deck, learn about market analysis and focused sales, and write a business plan. Intro to Hustle helps students who are shy, who need help telling their story, and/or who are looking for valuable feedback. Students learn about the hard work CEOs put in to get their business ideas off the ground.

Summary

How do athletes and teams use data to improve their performance and make decisions? The Data and Sports Analytics class takes an interdisciplinary approach to answer this question and others like it. In this class, we will focus on how to interpret, evaluate, and compare data for individual players, team performances, and biases in data. We will focus on using Google Sheets and functions to handle real data from the sports of basketball and soccer. We will also explore innovations at the intersections of sports and tech such as fitness tracking and predictions.

Summary

Tech Exposure is perfect for anyone who feels s/he/they know little to nothing about tech and is interested in learning how to more effectively use a computer. Tech Exposure introduces students to a variety of introductory technical tools, hardware, and software. Various hands-on activities are provided to empower students to use tech tools and build their professional skills. In addition, the class is student directed, meaning instructors tailor curriculum to the topics students are interested in. Students learn how to use and manipulate web browsers, set up and learn to manage email accounts, and complete independent research projects.
